Have you lost an entire row of missing teeth? Or have you lost multiple teeth in different parts of a single arch? Either of these situations could make you a potential candidate for dentures. Of course, every patient has different needs when it comes to tooth replacement. Our team will help you determine whether dentures are the right choice for you based on a thorough examination of your mouth.

Types of Dentures

Getting dentures doesn’t necessarily mean the same thing for every patient. Depending on your situation, we may recommend partial dentures, full dentures, or implant dentures. Each of these options comes with its own pros and cons; here’s a basic overview of what you need to know about them.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures can fill in multiple gaps in a single arch. In addition to a gum-colored base and natural-looking replacement teeth, they come with metal clasps that help ensure that they stay in place. A traditional partial denture can be taken out of your mouth at any time.

Full Dentures

A full denture is used to replace an entire row of missing teeth. The base and the replacement teeth are made out of lifelike materials in order to help the prosthesis look as natural as possible. You can generally count on them to stay in place thanks to suction. Like partial dentures, traditional full dentures are removable and can be taken out of the mouth for regular cleanings.

Implant Dentures

An implant denture is a full or partial denture that has been anchored to a number of implant posts. This way, you won’t have to worry about your prosthesis slipping or shifting around inside your mouth. Some implant dentures are removable. However, if you get an implant denture that’s fixed in place, you can brush it as if it were your natural teeth.

The Benefits of Dentures

There’s a reason why dentures have survived the test of time. Here are just some of the advantages they have to offer:

  • They restore your bite and allow you to enjoy a wider range of foods again.
  • They provide a cost-effective way to replace many teeth at once.
  • They are relatively easy to take care of.
  • They can last for 10 years or more with proper maintenance.

Denture FAQs

How long will it take to get my denture?

The process of getting a denture always requires the patient to make multiple visits. Typically, these involve a consultation where we get to know the patient and have a chance to examine their mouth, and then we take impressions to start designing their prosthetic. From there, the patient will be fitted with multiple “audition dentures” until they find the perfect look and fit, and this will be used to create their final denture.

If the patient needs to have a few teeth removed, this and the necessary recovery can affect the timeline as well. All in all, the entire experience can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Fortunately, Dr. Glynn will give you a much more concrete estimate when you come to see him in person.

Will my dentures look natural?

Yes! Today’s dentures are nothing like the bulky prosthetics your parents or grandparents might have worn. Modern-day dentures are designed to recreate nature down to the smallest detail. And, Dr. Glynn will also make sure that your prosthetic is made to suit your unique face. Rather than giving you a generically attractive set of teeth, he’ll personalize your denture so that it helps you look like the absolute best version of you.

Are there any diet restrictions with dentures?

Right after getting dentures, we recommend that a patient stick to a soft food diet while they adjust to eating with them. After that, a patient can basically have whatever they like, with a few caveats. Ideally, the patient should either avoid or be very careful when eating particularly hard or sticky foods that could damage their dentures. They also need to be careful when having extremely hot beverages, as the prosthetic can sometimes make it difficult for a person to gauge temperature until the liquid reaches their throat.

Most find it easier to cut things like meat and other tough-to-chew items into smaller bites as well. With these considerations in mind, the average patient will find they are able to eat a wider variety of items compared to before they got their dentures.

Can I use my insurance to help pay for dentures?

Yes, most dental insurance plans will help pay for dentures, as they are considered an advanced restorative procedure. The amount of coverage can vary from policy to policy, but it tends to be about 50% of the prosthetic. It’s important to note that while a plan might help pay for a denture, it may not cover the dental implants used to support it. We will go over all of these details at your consultation so you’ll know exactly what to expect when it comes to your financial commitment. If needed, we can also discuss how you can space out the cost using low-to-no-interest financing with CareCredit or LendingClub.
