Nitrous Oxide Sedation
Nitrous oxide sedation is a time-tested way to help patients stay calm and relaxed in the dental chair. This sedation method is considered safe for most people, and it’s often suitable for those who experience mild feelings of anxiety when visiting the dentist for any reason. And since nitrous oxide wears off quickly, it will allow you to get back to your normal routine immediately once your treatment is complete.
Who is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?
You might be a suitable candidate for nitrous oxide sedation if any of the following describe you:
- You are mildly nervous or afraid of having dental treatment performed.
- You have a stronger-than-normal gag reflex that has interfered with dental work in the past.
- You find it difficult to sit still for extended periods.
- Your mouth is resistant to numbing agents.
- You have unusually sensitive teeth.
Note that nitrous oxide sedation may not be the best fit for you if you are pregnant, if you currently have sinus congestion, or if you are suffering from some sort of respiratory disease. Our team will review your health history and consider your situation carefully before helping you decide whether nitrous oxide sedation is suitable in your case.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?
You don’t need to do anything special to prepare for nitrous oxide sedation. That said, you should avoid having a large meal two hours before your treatment. This will help keep the risk of nausea to a minimum.
When we’re ready to begin your treatment, we’ll place a small mask over your nose. Then we’ll turn on a special machine that will deliver a special mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through the mask, allowing you to breathe it in. After a few minutes of inhaling the mixture, you’ll begin to feel more relaxed. Some patients report feelings of euphoria and even become giggly, which is why nitrous oxide is also known as “laughing gas.”
Even though nitrous oxide is not meant to put you to sleep, it can make you feel drowsy enough to drift off on your own. If that happens, it will be easy enough for our team to reawaken you with a light shake.
Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide
At the end of your treatment, we’ll turn off the nitrous oxide and have you breathe in pure oxygen for a few minutes. The effects of the nitrous oxide should wear off relatively quickly, leaving you alert enough to drive on your own. Once you leave our office, you should be able to resume your regular routine right away.
Bear in mind that if you require a particularly invasive dental treatment, you may need to set aside some time to rest at home afterward. Our team will make sure that you have an accurate idea of what to expect following your procedure so that you can prepare accordingly.
Oral Conscious Sedation

With oral conscious sedation, you can finally get the important care you need. This effective solution will help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your visit with us. What’s more, you’ll have little to no memory of your procedure afterward. In fact, for patients who have struggled with dental anxiety all their lives, oral conscious sedation can show them what an anxiety-free visit to the dentist looks like.
If you’d like to use oral conscious sedation during your next visit, Dr. Glynn will review your medical history to determine if it’s safe for you. If it is, we’ll write you a prescription for a commonly prescribed sedative. On the day of your procedure, you’ll take your pill one hour before your appointment. Be sure that a friend or family member is available to drive you to and from your appointment because you should not drive while under the pill’s effects.
IV Sedation

IV sedation is recommended for patients with severe dental anxiety or dental phobia. In addition, if several dental procedures are required to restore oral health, deep IV sedation allows a patient to remain comfortable and sedated while all of the procedures are completed during the course of one appointment. Furthermore, this type of sedation may be helpful for patients with a sensitive gag reflex, or those with neuromuscular conditions or special needs that prevent them from remaining comfortably seated in the dentist’s chair for a long period of time.
If you’ve been putting off important care because of anxiety, don’t delay any longer.
